2、 signals that could be sent through a loop of wire to switch on/off various appliances via a Personal Computer PC. The system hardware and software were designed based on the Telephone Standards. The hardware part includ
3、ed the DTMF receiver On/Off Hook detector Ring detector and an Input/Output PC Interfacing card. An example of controlling an appliance was provided in the study. The software control programming was written in Turbo Bas
4、ic and their flow charts are presented here for the readers attention.INTRODUCTIONHome Automation that was introduced in this study was implemented by designing the “Smart Control System that Controls All Appliances Remo
5、tely by Phone”. The design was based on the Telephony Standards which meant that the system was qualified tobe installed on the public switching systems. The system design was utilizing the Dual Tone Multifrequency DTMF
6、 signals that could be produced by the telephone set.These signals were sent from the user end through the loop wire to the destination end ,where the control system was stationed. The system consisted of three major pa
7、rts. The first part was the ring detector and DTMF receiver. The second part was the Input/Output interface unit. The third part was the personal computer which was programmed with Turbo Basic Software to perform the on

10、signals. Hence the caller party should use a telephone set equipped with a DTMF keypad for sending a number.Telephone sets using the DTMF method for sending a telephone number were equipped with a push-button key pad wit
11、h 12 keys which represented the numbers 0 through 9and the symbol and . See figure 3. Pressing one of the keys caused the DTMF generator to generate two tones in the voice band 300 - 3000 Hz. There was a low frequency t
12、one for each row and a high frequency tone for each column. Pressing key5 for example generated a 770 Hz tone and a 1336 Hz tone. By using the dual tone method 12 unique combinations were produced from only seven tones
13、when the 1 2position keypad was used. Figure 3: DTMF Keypad and FrequenciesThe frequencies and the keypad layout have been internationally standardized but the tolerances on individual frequencies varied in different c
14、ountries. The North American standards were1.5 for the generator and f 2.0 for the receiver. The tones have been selected carefully so that the DTMF receiver in the exchange office would not confuse them with the other
