4、tioninfrastructureweillustratetheirusevaluewithinourganizationsummarizingfindingsfromqualitativequantitativeevaluations.Weconcludebyelabatingsociotechnicalchallengeswehavefacedinourdesigndeploymentprocess.IntroductionInt
5、hispaperwedescribeourwkonthedesigndeploymentofthePlasmaPosterslargescreendigitalposterboardsthatdisplaycommunitygeneratedinteractivemultimediacontentinthephysicalenvironment.Inspiredbytheuseofphysicalposterboardsinsocial
6、spaces(seeFigure1)suchpubliccommunitytechnologiesaredesignedfpeoplewhoatleastonoccasionoccupymovethroughthesamegeographicallocation.Theyblurthenotional“boundary”betweenvirtualphysicallocalesofcommunicationtakeadvantageof
7、thefactthatrelationshipsusuallytakeplaceofflineaswellasonline(Wellman1999).TheintentbehindthePlasmaPostersistostimulateunplannedsocialinteractionsarounddigitalcontentthusprovideopptunitiesfdiscoveryofsharedinterests.Such
8、conversationsarecentralinestablishingstrengtheningsocialties(Granovetter1983).ThiswksitswithinthesamedesignspaceasresearchcarriedbyHoudeetal.(1998)whoprojectedadigitalnewslettercreatedbymembersofaresearchgroupintoacommon
9、gatheringspaceSnowdonGrasso(2001)whodescribethe“CommunityWall”(CWall)acommunitybulletincontent(4)people’sactionswithregardtocontent(consideringreadersadministratsincludingplacementadministrationmoderationconsumption).Stu
10、dy2:InfmationsharingwithinFXPALOurstudywasinthreeparts.Firstwemappedthelabspaceusingflolayoutts.Thenweobservedphotographedactivitiesinpublicareasnotingpeople’smovementthroughthebuilding.Followingthisweengaged17peopleinap
11、hotographtextdiarystudywithsubsequentinterviewsabouttheironlineofflineinfmationsharingpracticeswithintheganization.Twoadministrativestaff2summerinterns2contractsconsultants3supptstaff8researcherstookpartinthestudy.Interv
12、iewsweresemistructuredlastedbetween3090minutes.SummaryStudy2revealedthatcommunicationcontentsharingwithcolleaguesoutsideprojectsocialgroupsisseenasvaluablewithinourganizationbutdoesnotoccurasfrequentlyasisdesired.Peoplea
13、reroutinelyattheirdesksaccessibleviaonlinecommunicationtoolsbutarealsomobilewithinthebuilding.Althoughallareasofthebuildingarepassedthroughthereareclearlyidentifiablegatheringplacesplacespeoplespendtime“idling”waiting.Pe
14、oplecommonlysharedigitalcontentwithinestablishedgroups.Peopleseldompostphysicalfliersbecauseofthe“overhead”ofproducingthemplacingthembecausedigitalcommunicationtoolsareliterally“attheirfingertips”.Weconcludedthatdigitalp
15、osterboardscouldrepresentanewgenreofinfmal“l(fā)ightweight”communicationmediumwithinFXPALleveragingtheexistingbiasfelectroniccommunicationsprovidingalessintrusivemepublicmethod(notdirecttoothers’emailInBoxes)fsharingcontent.
