2、d it becomes the classical work in American literature and establishes his supreme fame in literary world. All the King’s Men, which is published in 1946, gets the political image of Willie from the experience of Huey P.
3、 Long, so it is regarded as a biographical work by many people, who only confine their mind into competing for authority in political life. Meanwhile, some critics analyze it from the perspectives such as New Historicism
4、, Self–redemption and the original sin, which give some research on self–realization. While the spiritual dilemmas that Warren has created are also a shining point, for in the novel, Warren has described the main charact
5、ers’ struggles in detail. This thesis will apply Lacan’s Mirror Theory to explore the inevitability of self-reconstruction by analyzing the conflicts of the narrator—Jack. The thesis discusses the origins and the d
6、evelopments of Jack’s spiritual dilemma. The character—Jack is attracted by others in the mirror and he also tries to identify with them in order to break the lack of being, which results in his conflicts and divides him
7、 into two extremes. The reason why Jack has recognized the image in the mirror as himself lies in the fact that he is not a complete man in reality. Between the opposing sides of the environments and one’s consciousness,
8、 the question how to balance the self and others becomes a focus. Jack’s exaggerated longing for the image of others and desire for perfection become the main reason in causing his struggles. But he realizes his self-int
9、egration and establishes his position through various temptation and frustration, especially by witnessing the shadow of death. Finally, the thesis analyzes Jack’s self–reconstruction and return intending to explore the
