2、d by critics, such as their life experience, their writing purposes and their achievements, especially how they effected in their short stories. Joyce mocked the “moral paralysis” from which Dubliners suffered while Lu X

3、un ridiculed the “moral inferiority” ingrained in the Chinese people. Both Joyce and Lu Xun depicted a gallery of pathetic characters, all victims of a suffocating society. Choosing a dozen of short stories from their wo

4、rks as samples, this dissertation compares the short stories written by Joyce and Lu Xun from the following aspects: themes, characterizations, writing styles, and narrative strategies. The comparative study focuses on J

5、oyce’s Dubliners and Lu Xun’s short stories, mainly from the collections Call to Arms and Wandering. It is found that the elements of modernism have been in embryo in their initial works. Joyce and Lu Xun were among the

6、first in the twentieth century to structure many of their stories in the “new” style, a style which de-emphasizes the plot. Rather, both Joyce and Lu Xun adopt the “epiphany” plot format to develop their stories. Further

7、more, most of their short stories are narrated in a tragic-ironic tone. On the other hand, they use different structures in their short-story collections. Joyce’s Dubliners is a homogeneous stream and the fifteen stories

8、 in it are not simply a collection of varying short stories but all share a definite structure, with interweaving, recurring symbols. He attempts to reveal the moral sickness of Irish society through the four aspects of

9、“childhood, adolescence, maturity and public live”. However, Lu Xun’s collections are heterogeneous, with numerous stories which reveal a wider aspect of Chinese society. This dissertation is composed of four chapters c

10、entering on the following aspects: children, intellectuals, women, and civil citizens. Through cross-comparison, this dissertation examines similarities between the authors, revealing parallels and synchronizations betwe

11、en modern eastern and western literature. Furthermore, it points out that the modern eastern literature, with the representative of Lu Xun, does not lag behind. It is anticipated that this study will be a first step in o
