8、ing the current situation includes determining how toconvert existing houses and how to define a smart appliance.Many studies have examined these issues. The study in [1]described a smart home intelligent oven that would
9、 be definedby most manufactures as cooking faster; however, a differentcharacterization was offered and a smart oven was defined as adevice that cooks healthier food based on a selected recipe pro-videdearlierbyafamilyme
10、mber.Itcanalsocommunicatewithother appliances, such as a cell phone, fire alarm, and smartfridge, from which it can determine the availability of ingre-dients. The definition of a smart home as set by Intertek waspresent
11、ed in [4] from work on the DTI Smart Home Project: a“dwelling incorporating a communications network that con-nects key electrical appliances and services, and allows themto be remotely controlled, monitored, or accessed
12、” (p.569).Customers’ knowledge of and experience with energy man-agement is a major factor in electricity conservation. Casestudies should be used as a means of determining the optimalsystem for energy and cost managemen
13、t because lack of tech-nical information about monitoring and control systems affectsprogress toward conservation. Customers must be involved inDSM programs.In [10], DSM was defined as the implementation of poli-cies and
14、 measures so that energy consumption is controlled,regulated, and reduced. Standards are to be clearly defined toenhance customers’ decisions toward the purchase of homeappliances.In 2001, household’s utility payments av
15、eraged $1400 [5,11]. As a result, energy conservation is targeted and shouldprovide an economic benefit. Customer investment in monitor-ing and controlling equipment cannot be an effective solutionwithout a financial ret
16、urn. To counteract the prohibitive costof smart home equipment, the regulatory market should limitthe current prices of smart home devices [5].A key smart home element is the EMS, the major activitiesofwhicharethefocusof
