2、matics has aroused great interests from scholars both at home and abroad since the 1970s, which consists of many famous theories in which the Conversational Implicature Theory and Cooperative Principle play an important

3、role. More and more scholars apply these theories into various language research fields to make the communication smoother and more fluent. This thesis tries to analyze the conversational implicature in The Importance of

4、 Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde from the perspective of pragmatics with the Cooperative Principle and off-record strategies as the theoretical framework. Previous criticisms and researches on The Importance of Bein

5、g Earnest, and the theories adopted, especially those related with literature, have been reviewed respectively. It is found that analyzing this drama from pragmatics is feasible and necessary, for the author found few sc

6、holars apply pragmatic theory into the analysis of drama, especially The Importance of Being Earnest in which there are great quantities of dialogues. Then the elaboration on Grice’s Cooperative Principle and 15 off-reco

7、rd strategies are introduced. As the theoretical foundations, Cooperative Principle and its sub-maxims explain how the conversational implicature is generated and interpreted; the 15 off-record strategies are the ways of

8、 generating implicature, adopted by the speaker in order to do the Face Threatening Acts to the hearer indirectly. The main body of this thesis is the case analysis of the conversational implicature in The Importance of

9、 Being Earnest. Thirty-four conversations are selected from the drama and are classified further into different categories based on the maxims of Cooperative Principle and 15 off-record strategies. People prefer to speak

10、 skillfully in their daily communication through different language strategies, in order to avoid the direct conflicts and remain harmonious relations. In this drama, characters take various strategies to convey what the
