2、s rapidly. In contrast to local area network (LAN), WLAN has a series of advantages such as mobility, flexibility and expansibility . As a result, more and more companies and individual users make choices of it. At
3、the same time, access point (AP) plays an important role in WLAN because the AP is a bridge connecting LAN with WLAN and gives support to the expansibility of WLAN. Therefore, the principles and
4、 funcitions of AP have been discussed and analyzed first, and a standard AP has been implemented on Soekris net4501 development board. Although WLAN has a series of advantages, there are a few disadvantages, inc
5、luding the lack of security. Because of the broadcasting of radio wave, radio packets maybe recevied easily by illegal users. To solve this problem, a new protocol named WVLAN protocol is intr
6、oduced in this thesis, which imported from VLAN protocol (802.1Q) in LAN. In practice, WVLAN protocol strenthens the access controlling of users to protect the network from wire tapping. At the same time
7、, updating AP is needed only in the WVLAN protocol and no change to the mobile stations. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the principles of WLAN and AP. Chapter 2 discusses the
8、 IEEE 802.11 protocol and the functions of AP in detail, and implemented a standard AP, which gives me a clear understanding of AP. Chapter 2 is the focus of the whole thesis, in which the principles, structures an
9、d functions of the virtual local area network protocol in WLAN (WVLAN protocol) is described in detail. And simulation is done in Chapter 4, in which simulation models of OPNET are described in detail an
10、d simulation results are analyzed. As a result, the feasibility of WVLAN protocol is validated according to the simulation results. The last part of this thesis summarizes the whole thesis and
