2、ce The Mill on the Floss (1860) and The Awakening (1899) continuously attract readers. In the narrow- minded patriarchal society, both protagonists suffer from their families, their friends and even th

3、eir lovers. They both end up in the water, the former in the river, and the latter in the sea. Although both of them die in the end, the meanings of their death are different. Maggie dies

4、due to her dilemma between love and duty. But Edna dies on account of a more challenging intention. She dies as a protest to the confinement of the narrow- minded patriarchal society. In The

5、 Mill on the Floss, the protagonist Maggie is in sharp conflict between her desire and the moral duty that the male- dominated society imposed on her. At the very beginning, Maggie has fancie

6、s on knowledge and freedom. When she grows up, she is inclined to follow the conventional moral values and ask for acceptance from the narrow- minded society . Finally, she is devoured by the

7、 river Floss, a symbol of family burden and duty. Unlike the obedient Maggie, the protagonist Edna in The Awakening daringly challenges the moral conventions. She wants to have her own identit

8、y rather than being her husband’ s personal property. She grows from a conventional wife to a new woman. Finally, in order to make a manifestation to the narrow- minded society, she throws her

9、self into the sea that once liberates her. By textual analysis of both The Mill on the Floss and The Awakening, this thesis explores the reason of the two protagonists’death. Maggie dies out

10、 of her obedience and self- sacrifice. But Edna dies as a manifestation to the patriarchal confinement. And the ultimate concern of this thesis is to reveal women’ s distinctive attitude towards

11、 social suppression. Finally, we come to the conclusion that women should be brave enough to take a bold step in their self- fulfillment. Key words: moral duty; awakening; active desire; death
