3、. She was particularly good at the subtle use of stream of consciousness to explore the fate of women who are open to all kinds of torture or easy to go astray. Thanks to her brilliant skills of writing, tremendous creat

4、ive fruits, unique literary style, Oates is called “Female Faulkner”. Oates is elected to be a member of American Academy Literature and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1978 and Oates has twice been nominated as a candi

5、date for Nobel Prize in literature. Since its publication in 1992, Black Water has been regarded as a work that can compare with them. The novella wins National Book Critics Circle Award finalist and Pulitzer Prize fina

6、list and it is considered as one of Oates’s best books by The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, The Rocky Mountain News, and The Times. However, it is to be regretted that by now Chinese researches on Black Water have b

7、een almost in silence. According to research materials abroad, its research focuses upon the following perspectives: combination of a historical event and creative fiction, erotic-political power dynamics, the relationsh

8、ip between female sacrifice and social violence, Faustian moral vision of the protagonist, feminism, the tragic color of the work, the stylistic devices of Black Water and so on. Regrettably no critic exclusively and sys

9、tematically applies myth-archetypal criticism to the work. This thesis tries to find the myth-archetypal features of the modern novella Black Water to make an in-depth interpretation of the text. It contains the followin

10、g four parts: The first part is a general introduction to Joyce Carol Oates and her work Black Water, as well as literature review on Black Water. On this basis, the paper applies myth-archetypal criticism to Black Wate

11、r to prove the author’s creative intent. The second part briefly introduces myth-archetypal criticism, and three theorists Frazer, Jung and Frye, as well as the myth-archetypal background of Black Water. The third part

12、 interprets myth-archetypal features of Black Water in details from the three aspects: the myth-archetypal interpretation of the central character Kelly as scapegoat, Eve and Faust; the myth-archetypal interpretation of
