5、. Cricket may be a peculiar example, but I think it is instructive to look at the evolution of this sport in its historical, cultural and political context; that is, in light of its complex and intertwined relationship w
6、ithin those influences, as a frame of reference for inquiring whether baseball or other kinds of pop culture has had similar complex, intertwined relation- ships with American culturalization or colonialism. In a preface
7、 to his book, Beyond a Bound- ary, James (1993 [1963]) asks, ‘what do they know of cricket who only cricket know’? Through his autobiographical account of his intense fascination about cricket, his narrative is in part a
8、 thick description of cricket, as understood from the perspective of a passionate insider to the game that paralleled his growing interest in classical literature. As he puts it,I did not merely play cricket. I studied i
9、t. I analyzed strokes, I studied types, I read its history, its beginnings, how and when it changed from period to period, I read about it in Australia and in South Africa… I read and appreciated the phraseology of laws.
10、 It was in that way, I am con- fident, that the Greeks educated themselves on games with their records and traditions orally transmitted from generation to generation. Amateur though I am, I see signs of it in Greek lit-
11、 erature, but you must have gone through the thing yourself to understand them. (James 1993 [1963]: 32–33)Cricket is a game of high and difficult technique in a way that paralleled the rootedness of Greek games and poetr
12、y in religion. The ultimate greatness of the bowler is in his head. More important than the technical skills, which could be developed, qualities such as pace, length, command, stamina and concentration were attributes t
13、hat distinguished exceptional players from average ones. The greatness of the batsman is not so much in his own skill as that he sets in motion all the immense possibilities that are flexibly contained in the game as str
14、ucturally organized. The greatest performances would be produced by the poet, the artist, the philosopher. The complexity and sophistication of the game, especially at the mental level, meant that as a sport it did not r
15、ely on mere physical prowess and was something that only few gifted players could master. This heightened sense of exclusive mastery overlapped with the imper- ial elitism that colored the game as a whole. What Stoddart
16、and Sandiford (1998) called ‘the imperial game’ was simply a reflection of a commonplace sentiment that cricket was an intri- cate aspect of the imperialist civilizing mission at many levels. As Mangan (1992) had often a
17、rgued, sport in general was Britain’s chief spiritual export of the imperial era, insofar as it served as a moralizing, culturalizing and politicizing force behind the institutions of law, reli- gion and education. The s
