1、Textile materials in medical use have many requirements with the main demand being bacterial inhibition.Compression therapy is a form of therapy used to treat numerous limb conditions including varicose veins,aching legs
2、 and deep vein thrombosis.Medical compression hosiery stockings are used in the treatment of these conditions and to improve the overall comfort of the wearer.Compression hosiery is knitted to provide the greatest amount
3、 of pressure at ankle and gradually less at the more proximal aspects of the limb.
Different materials have been used in the manufacture of medical compression hosiery including Spandex,Lycra microfibres,silk,spande
4、x,polyurethane and polyamide.This study used medical compression hosiery based polyurethane and polyamide covered yarn,which comprised a polyurethane core yarn wound twice with polyamide yarn.The synthetic nature of the
5、yarn used in the manufacture of medical compression hosiery retains moisture and warmth through sweating,creating a breeding ground for bacteria.This bacterium causes odour,discoloration and in severe cases bacterial inf
6、ection in the wearer.This study used two antibacterial agents,SCJ-891 and SCJ-963 on yarn and fabric samples.
The agents used,SCJ-891 and SCJ-963 were non-leaching therefore turbidity evaluation was used to evaluate
7、 the bacterial inhibition rate.The first step in this research was to generate a graph to bridge the gap between standard bacteria plate counting and turbidity evaluation using a spectrophotometer.Two types of bacteria w
8、ere used,Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli.The curves produced had the following y values and curve equation,y=0.917x for E.coli bacteria and y=2.173x for S.Aureus bacteria.This method proved to be shortening th
9、e testing time as well as allow for multiple test to be completed at a time.
Medical compression hosiery was then treated using the two antibacterial agents,SCJ-891 and SCJ-963,to investigate their antimicrobial per
10、formance.Polyurethane and polyamide covered yarn and hosiery fabric samples were treated with SCJ-891 and SCJ-963 at varying parameters,including concentration,temperature,pH and liquor ratio.Each parametre combination g
11、ave a different antimicrobial efficacy against gram positive Staphylococcus Aureus and gram negative Escherichia Coli bacteria.
Orthogonal analysis of the best antimicrobial efficacy and resultant ANOVA and optimisa
12、tion analysis showed that all four variables,concentration,temperature,pH and liquor ratio played an important role in antimicrobial efficacy.SCJ-963 treated fabric had better results when compared with SCJ-963 treated y
13、arn,while both had better antibacterial efficacy to SCJ-891 fabric and yarn.From the optimisation results an SCJ-891 concentration of 10% of weight of fabric,a temperature of 99 oC and a liquor ratio 1:20 can be used for
14、 optimum results.pH levels were set at 5 and 4.5 for the yarn (AT:82.7%) and fabric (AT:83.6%) respectively.For SCJ-963 the recommended parameters were a liquor ratio of 1:15,a SCJ-963 concentration of 10% of weight of f
15、abric,a temperature of 99oC and a controlled pH of 5 for both the yarn (AT:85.4%) and the fabric (AT:86.6%).The tests were repeated to prove that the optimised parameters met the standard bacterial inhibition rate,even a
16、fter washing.
Scanning electron microscope images showed no visible change for SCJ-891,however a shiny coating was observed on the surface of samples treated with SCJ-963.The results from tensile testing showed the
17、deformation rate for SCJ-891 treated yarn increased from 6.25%for the untreated samples to 11.78%for the treated samples.The average deformation rate for SCJ-891 treated fabric increased from 6.54% for the untreated samp
18、les to 12.01% for the treated samples.The deformation rate for yarn increased from 6.25% for the untreated samples to 13.46% for SCJ-963 treated yarn.The average deformation rate for SCJ-963 treated fabric increased from
19、 6.54% for the untreated to 14.38% for the treated sample.Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant change in the elastic recovery for both agents.The results in this study indicated that both SCJ-963 and
