4、.IntroductionThepurposeofthispaperistostudytheevolutionofthestrategicmanagementliteraturebasedonananalysisofthecontentofthepast26yearsofstrategicmanagementresearchpublishedintheleadingjournalsinthefieldnamelytheAcademyof
5、ManagementJournal(AMJ)AcademyofManagementReview(AMR)AdministrativeScienceQuarterly(ASQ)theStrategicManagementJournal(SMJ).Thepaperservesnotonlytoassessthestructurepastevolutionofthecontentofthestrategicmanagementfieldits
6、differentsubfieldsbutalsopresentssomeconjecturesaboutfurtherdevelopmentsinthisliterature.Byhelpingstrategicmanagementscholarstounderstbetterthedirectioninwhichthefieldisgoingwherethegapsarethepaperisintendedtoprovideagui
7、delinefscholarsinpositioningtheirfutureresearcheffts.Wetherefefocusontwoquestions.FirstwhatisthecontenttheevolutionofstrategicmanagementresearchSecondwhohaspublishedmostintheliteratureofstrategicmanagementwhatwastheircon
8、tributiontotheevolutionofthefieldThefirstquestioninvolvesaclassificationofarticlestoevaluatedisciplinaryevolutiontodeterminetheexpostfactopriitiesofauthseditsrewswaslaterrewritteninaseparatebookTheConceptofCpateStrategy(
9、1971)(Rumeltetal.1994).Withtheseauthsresearchshiftsfromadeterministiconebestwayapproachtoamecontingentperspectivewhereganizationsneedtoadapttotheirexternalenvironment.Howeverthesestudiesweremanageriallyientedwithanemphas
10、isonnmativepreionratherthanonanalysis.Basedmainlyonindepthcasestudiesofsinglefirmsindustriestheresultsofthesestudiesarehardlygeneralizable.Inresponsetothisissueofgeneralizabilityduringthe1970satransitionstartedtowardsare
11、searchientation.Thisperiodcanbeacterizedbythedevelopmentofadichotomybetweentwosetsofresearchbasedonverydifferentontologicalepistemologicalperspectives.Oneviewpursueda‘processapproach’whichconsistedessentiallyofdeivestudi
12、esofhowstrategieswerefmedimplemented.Thisresearchbasedontheobservationofactualganizationaldecisionmakingledtomerealisticconceptionsofprocessinwhichstrategieswerearrivedatindirectlytosomedegreeunintentionally.Quinn’s(1980
13、)‘logicalincrementalism’MintzbergWaters’s(19781985)‘emergentstrategy’areexamplesofsuchstudies.Atthesametimeastreamofresearchseekingtoundersttherelationshipbetweenstrategyperfmancealsostartedtodevelop.Departingfromtheanal
14、ysisofcasestudiesofasinglefirmindustrythisdeductivelargescalestatisticalresearchdevelopedtestedhypothesesbasedonmodelsabstractedfromthestructure–conduct–perfmance(S–C–P)paradigm(Bain19561964Mason19391949)dominantinthelit
15、eratureofindustrialganization(IO)economics(Pter1981).Pter(e.g.197919801985)hasmadethemostinfluentialcontributionstothefield.UsingastructuralapproachPter(1980)outlinesaframewkthatcanbeusedinunderstingthestructureofanindus
16、tryisausefulanalyticaltoolfassessinganindustry’sattractivenessfacilitatingcompetitanalysis.Inthismannertheprimaryfocusofstrategicmanagementduringthisperiodwasontheenvironmentitsrelationshipwithafirm.Howeverfromthe1980son
