3、tityofthefirms’operationstobeefficient.Inthosemodelsstagesconsistofphasesacterisedbyaspecifictypeofdivisionoflabourofcodination.InthispaperweapplytheGreiner’smodeltologisticsasthisfunctioninitsbroadsenserepresentsmanagem
4、entofanumberoftraditionalactivitiessuchaswarehousingtransptcustomerserviceetc.FromasurveyamongPolishSMEswelearnthatfirmsusedifferentcodinationmechanismswhentheygrowinsize.Largerfirmsapplymefmalmanagementtechniquese.g.oni
5、nventymanagementmodellingaswellasmesophisticatedinfmationsystemstodealwiththeincreasedcomplexitytheyface.Theseresultsgiveempiricalsuppttotheconceptualgrowthmodelsprovidethedeionofmanagerialenvironmentfdecisionmakinginlog
6、istics.Duringthelastfewdecadeslogisticsdevelopedfromanunglamousfunctiontoanimptantsetofactivitiesthataddvaluetofirms(Sharman1984).Howeverinitsbroadsenseitisratherahizontalchainofprocessesthanaverticalpillarinthetradition
7、alfunctionalganisations.Assuchitisacomplextasktomanagetheseactivitiesespeciallywhenfirmsgrow.WebelievethatmanagerialtechniquesinSMEschangetogetherwiththeirgrowthlogisticsmanagementconstantlygetsbettersupptadequatetorequi
8、rementsofsmallercompaniesiffinancialmaterialassetsareattheirdisposal.SingleSMEsnaturallyhavesmallercapacitiesthanlargecpationsbutitdoesnotmeanthattheydonotrequireprofessionallogisticsmanagement.Onthe3whilemakingstrategic
9、decisions.Onthebasisoftheseobservationsthemainresearchquestiontackledinthispaperwouldbe:HowdoSMEschangethemanagementoftheirlogisticssupplychainprocesseswhentheygrowcanthesechangesbeunderstoodintermsofstagesingrowthmodels
10、Theremainderofthearticleconsistsoffoursections.ThenextsectionconsistsofaliteraturereviewongrowthofcompanieswithspecialattentiontotheroleofcodinationmechanismssupptedbyIT.Fromthisreviewweconstructathreestagemodeltobeappli
11、edinSME’s.InthefollowingsectionswepresentanalysetheresultsofasurveyamongPolishSME’s.Inthesurveyweconcentrateonthelogisticsfunctionasthisisthecementbetweenthevariousfunctionalareasassuchrepresentsthecodinationproblemsinth
12、emostextremefm.FirstwedistinguishthreesizecategiestofindoutwhethereachofthemhasaspecificuseofITfcodination.Weassumethatthesecategiesreflectthedevelopmentphasesofindividualfirms.Weexpectfirmstochoosetheoptimalcodinationme
13、chanismbothasanindependentfirmaspartofonemesupplychainsinlinewiththerelevantcontingencies.Thenwegointoamedetailedanalysisofourfindings.Inthelastsectionwediscussthefindingswithintheframewkofourconceptualmodel.SurveyedSMEs
14、useverytraditionalmeansofinfmationtransferlimitingadaptationofmodernexpensivetechnologies.Ifcomputertechnologyisusedveryseldomawkisimplementedwhichwouldallowmanagingdirectlytransferringinfmationtowkersresponsiblefderfulf
15、ilment.Themainresearchquestionweputwas:HowdoSMEschangethemanagementoftheirlogisticssupplychainprocesseswhentheygrowcanthesechangesbeunderstoodintermsofstagesingrowthmodelsHerewewillanswerthisquestionintwosteps:firstwedea
16、lwiththeexistenceofphasesingrowthsecondlywiththeuseofITinthecodinationmanagementprocessesinuse.FeachofthesequestionswefirstsummarizeourfindingsfromliteraturethenweconfrontthesewithfindingsfromoursurveyamongPolishSMEs.Ina
17、finaldiscussionwereconsiderourconclusionstoderiverecommendationsfmanagementoflogisticsissuesffurtherresearch.ToconcludeSMEscangrowifmarketsallowmanagementgoesfitalthoughgrowthisnotinevitablebutratheradeliberatechoice.Ifm
