3、ntbutarenotsowellestablishedfacompositecomponent.Adesignmethodologyfcompositeshasbeenemerginginwhichaprincipalprocedureisdesignanalysis.Oneofthemostestablishedmethodsofanalysisisthatusingthefiniteelementtechniquethisisbe
4、ingsupplementedwithexperimentaltestsonprototypesusingphotoelasticanalysisstresspatternanalysisbythermalemissioncoupledwithconventionalstraingaugemoniting.Littlewkhasbeenundertakentocrelatetheresultsobtainedfromthesediffe
5、renttestmethodstocomparetheresultswithmeasurementsmadeonanactualcomponent.Thispaperpresentssomeofthewkundertakenconcerningtheanalysistestingofacompositeautomotivesuspensionarm.Theresultsobtainedfromthethreedifferentanaly

10、mplacessuchastheAdvancedTechnologyCentreattheUniversityofWarwickwhichwkwithmaterialmanufacturersautomotiveengineerstoenableunderstingaboutthesematerialsasanalternativetothetraditionalmaterialssuchassteel.Ifcompositesaret
11、ocompetewithtraditionalmaterialsinarealsensethenautomotivedesignersneedtobefullyawareoftheirstrengthscompound.TherefefiatplatesbeamsdiscsconstructedfromSMCwereanalysedundervariousloadingconditionsbefeprogressingontothede
12、signedcomponent.Mostvalidationtestswerecarriedoutusingstraingaugedspecimenstocrelatewiththefiniteelementanalysisresults.AlthoughitisrecognizedthatSMCisnotanisotropiematerialduetosomefibreientationduringprocessingfthepurp
13、osesofanalysisthematerialwasassumedtobeisotropic.AlsowhentheactualSMCsuspensionarmwascutupexaminedsignificantfibredistributionwasobservedintheribs.Itisfeltthatthecrelationbetweentheexperimentalanalysisresultsvalidatedthi
14、sassumptioninthecaseofthisparticularcomponent.StraingaugetestsBefeundertakingtheexperimentaltestwkthecompositecomponentwasmountedviaitsrubbermountingbushesontoarelativelyinfinitelystiffstructure.Itisverydifficulttocovera
15、lloftheloadingconditionswhenconductingexperimentalteststhusawstcasescenarioisusuallyassumed.Thewstcaseloadingconditiononsuspensioncomponentsisknownaspotholebrake.Thisattemptstosimulatethevehiclefallingintoadeeppotholeat3
16、0mphwiththebrakesfullyappliedatthepointofimpact.Theresultantfeaftlateralloadsarethencalculatedbasedontheweightvelocityofthevehicle.Duetothelimitationsofthetestrigthefullpotholeloadscouldnotbeappliedtothecomponentthusredu

19、hebodymountingbusheswherethecomponentwouldbemountedtothecarsubframe.Additionalstraingaugesweresituatedonsomeofthestrengtheningribsclosetotheantirollbarmountingposition.SPATEanalysisStresspatternanalysisbythermalemission(
20、SPATE)canbeusedtodeterminethesurfacestressesofcomponentsbystudyingthesmallchangesintemperatureduetocyclicloadingconditions.SPATEequipmentcomprisesadetectunitwithscanningheadananaloguesignalprocessingunitadigitalelectroni
21、cdataunit.Thesystemwksbydetectingtheminutetemperaturechangeswhichoccurwhenastructureiscyclicallyloaded.Theinfrareddetectscansthestructurecrelatesthemeasuredoutputwithareferencesignalfromtheloadingsystem.Anelectronicdatap
22、rocessingsystemcrelatesthedetectedstressinducedthermalfluctuationswiththeloadingreferencesignal.Acolourcontourmapofthesumoftheprincipalstresses(cr~4)isthenplottedtogetherwithabartgivingactualvalues.Thiscrelationofsignals
