4、 of the theories oncurriculum has laid a solid theoretical foundation for the reform. China cannot be the expectation.Under the guidance of the English Curriculum Standards (Ministry of Education of China, 2001),the Engl

5、ish curriculum reform in China has been implemented in pilot schools at all levels. Asstated in the Standards, English curriculum plays a critical role in China’ s basic education. It isnot only because a good command of

6、 English is one of the essential qualities of today’ s qualifiedpersonnel, but also for the reason that learning English will do good to students’all- rounddevelopment. Generally speaking, the tasks of the English curric

7、ulum are: (1) to stimulate andcultivate the students’ interests in learning English; (2) to help them build up confidence, formgood learning habits and master effective learning strategies; (3) to develop their learninga

8、utonomy and cooperative spirit; (4) to help them master basic language knowledge and skills,improve their ability to use English comprehensively; (5) to train their creative thinking skills,enhance their awareness of the

9、 cultural differences between the East and the West, widen theirhorizon; (6) and to help them develop in all- round way and for a lifelong time.1.2 Significance of the present studyThe new round English curriculum system

10、, which includes new concept of Englishcurriculum, new English curriculum assessment and new English coursebooks, brings about agreat shock to the old English education system. Guided by the new standards of Englishcurri

11、culum, more and more English coursebooks have made their way to the market. The rigidframework of “ one syllabus one coursebook”is broken. Local education departments have thefreedom to choose coursebooks by themselves.

12、Take the junior middle schools in Guangxi forexample. The English coursebooks currently used mainly include New Standard English(published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press) and English (published by People

13、Education Press), etc. The wealth of published English coursebooks makes selecting the rightcoursebook a challenging task. Teachers and students need to be able to make informed andappropriate choices when selecting cour

14、sebooks and supporting materials. So, choosing the righttextbook is becoming more and more significant at all levels of ELT schools. With such a richvariety of coursebooks available, how do teachers make their choices? S
