5、r from bankruptcy. One way of doing this is to reduce its expenses by decreasing the size of its workforce. For instance, General Motors (GM), the biggest manufacturer of cars in the world, declared bankruptcy on June

6、 1, 2009. In order to continue business, it had to cut hundreds of thousands of jobs. Another way companies reduce the cost of employment is by moving offshore where labour expenses are lower. This means a loss of job

7、s in countries like Canada where labour costs are high. These jobs move to people in countries like China and India where salaries are less expensive than other countries and overseas companies can produce their produ

8、cts more cheaply. In short, a person may lose his or her job because the company needs to strengthen its finances. Second, new technology in many companies can replace people. To start with, manufacturing companies of

9、ten choose to install automated systems in their factories. These systems can maintain high productivity and a higher quality of output, with only a few workers to operate the machinery. Also, online companies are gr

10、owing rapidly. The outcome is a loss of retail jobs. For instance, Amazon.com does not have a physical store. Instead, it offer goods on a website. Cashiers and sales staff are not needed. To sum up, people lose jobs

11、 because companies prefer to use advanced technology instead of labour. Lastly, an economic recession can result in unemployment. When the economy of a country slows down, people become cautious and stop unnecessary

12、spending. Eventually, there is no demand for luxury products. As a result, the companies that make these products need to reduce their expenses in order to survive. Many have to decrease the number of their employees

13、. Also, an economic recession can affect currency exchange rates. This, in turn affects companies that import or export goods. People in these companies are often laid off until the economic situation improves. To
