2、ducation, socio- cultural anthropology. Specifically, music education aims to study ethnic traditional music transmission as a part of the contents, and it has emphasized how the traditional mus

3、ic is transmitted from one generation to another through school education, while socio- cultural anthropology takes ethnic traditional music as a component of the culture of the ethnic group a

4、nd it believes that the transmission of ethnic traditional music itself is a cultural process. Therefore, it emphasizes how this part of ethnic culture is protected and developed through tran

5、smission and what the transmission means to the identity, meanings of the cultural symbols, maintenance and development of the ethnic values of the group. The thesis borrows the concepts and

6、methods of the music education on studying ethnic traditional music transmission on the one hand, on the other hand, it mainly uses concepts and methods of educational anthropology to explore

7、 the transmission it self. For this, the paper, based on the data obtained from a Uygur Muqam class at School OF Lukqin Town, Turfan Prefecture of Xinjiang. The study focuses on the schoo

8、l Muqam transmission through class teaching, and the transmissions of families and community Muqam Art Group are also within the study. To be specific, this paper attempts to offer an object

9、ive description and analysis of the existing Muqam transmission at Lukqin Town based on the data obtained from the field surveys at the school and the local community and the based on the

10、 literature of previous studies of the type. There are five parts in the paper excluding the introduction and conclusion parts. In the first part, a general description is given to the backgr

11、ound of Turfan Muqam, including its geographical location, eco- environment, brief history and Uygur customs concerned. The second part is contributed to the description and analysis of the pres

12、ent ways of the community transmission of Muqam at Lukqin Town. In the third part, the class Muqam transmission of the school is described and analyzed in a more detailed way. The forth par

13、t, based on the data obtained from the field and analysis in the previous parts, is an in- depth discussion on the role of education in transmission of ethnic traditional music and on how Turfa

14、n Muqam enters the school music education as a part of it. It is believed by the author of the thesis that, the Muqam class at Lukqin School as a new way for the transmission of Uygur Muqam

15、 in the new times, has its internal logic and condition for the existence and development. Of the conditions, the supports from the local community, folk Muqam artists as teachers and manag

16、ers of the class, and adoption of the traditional transmission approaches, are especially worth studying. Meanwhile, the author noted that the co- existence of the family- base transmission, com

17、munity Folk Art Group transmission and school class transmission is an ideal approach comparing to other approaches and method for preserving, transmitting traditional music cultures like Uygur

18、Muqam. It is believed that the ideas and knowledge obtained from the present study will be of importance for transmission of traditional music. Key Words: Turfan Muqam Muqam class school music
