2、orical devices. In the past few decades, metaphor has become the focus of multi- discipline studies: linguistics, anthropology philosophy, psychology, and education science. In 1980 Lakoff & Johnson

3、published Metaphor We Live by which marked the beginning of the contemporary theory of metaphor and a cognitive approach. They argue that “ metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in

4、 language but in thought and action, our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature” . The conceptual metaphor theory proposed by th

5、em is systematic and coherent. The core of the theory illustrates that conceptual metaphor is a cognitive activity, that is, human beings use the experiences in one field to illustrate or und

6、erstand another one. Therefore, they hold that metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but is a cognitive tool. In the past researches, the m ajority of scholars have focused their studies

7、 on the level of rhetoric, lexicons and sentences, but few scholars are concerned about the textual coherence functions of conceptual metaphor. Many scholars who devote themselves to textual coherence

8、 hold different views. Halliday & Hasan (1976, 1985) always see cohesion as necessary condition of coherence. Van. Dijk (1972, 1977) argues that textual coherence is reflected at two levels

9、: the local coherence and the global coherence. The former refers to the semantic relation between propositions. The latter refers to the relation formed by the text topic and macrostructure. The thesis argues that

10、 the textual coherence can be achieved at two levels: the surface level coherence and the deep level coherence. The thesis holds the systematicity and coherence of conceptual metaphor can be a
