2、n encourages the necessity of the study on cultural differences, which is the utmost difficulty in translation. As a phenomenon commonly seen in literary text, this situation is further complicated by cultural default wh

3、ich refers to the absence of relevant cultural background knowledge shared by the author and the intended readers. That is, what is transparent to the original readers in the form of cultural default is often opaque to t

4、he target readers, including the translator. To give an appropriate compensation of the translation of cultural default, the translator should have a good command of both the source language culture and a thorough unders

5、tanding of the author’s intention. With cultural schema as its theoretical framework, the present thesis explores the compensation in translation written by Mr. Ch’ien Chung-shu, in dealing with culture default in Fortr

6、ess Besieged, his English version of Weicheng. As one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, Fortress Besieged is generally regarded as a scholar’s novel since it involves numerous information of the Chinese an

7、d western cultures. This thesis intends to make a research into appropriate translation compensation of cultural default and points out that the cultural untranslatability has the potential to switch to translatability.
