3、inguistics, one consisting of the empirical observation and analysis of authentically-occurring text, both spoken and written. Corpus-based study has been widely applied in linguistics study to explore the collocations,

4、 syntactic structures, semantics as well as pragmatics, discourse analysis and the social cultures. The current study intends to make a corpus-based study of the adversative connectors‘ usage in two self-established corp

5、ora and tries to answer the following questions: Are there any differences (density, variety, position etc.) of the adversative connectors‘ usages between Chinese English graduates and native speakers? Is there any overu

6、se or underuse of adversative connectors in the learner corpus? Is there any misuse of adversative connectors in the learner corpus compared with those in the control corpus by native speakers? The learner corpus consist

7、s of 29 master‘s theses written by 29 English graduates from about 20 universities in China. All the authors are non-native speakers of English but they succeeded in an extremely competitive entrance examination to becom

8、e students in the master program. Meanwhile, the control corpus includes 24 master‘s theses from ProQuest-PQDT (ProQuest Dissertations &Theses), which were published during 2006 to 2013. All the appendices in each pa

9、per from both corpora were excluded in word and sentence count performed by Microsoft Word and WordSmith Tools Version 6. As far as the adversative connectors are concerned, the following twelve adversative connectors a

10、re selected: but (coordinator), while, although, whereas, rather than (subordinators), though (subordinator and conjunct), however, yet, on the other hand, nevertheless, instead, on the contrary (conjuncts). Those advers

11、ative connectors which appeared in the quotations and references were excluded during the count. Moreover, only adversative meanings of the connectors were included. That is to say, collocations like but also, nothing bu
